I'm glad you're using the GA rank hack and I thank you for checking your own trends. Validation from another site only helps to confirm these results.

We're also seeing the trend line go back up in the trailing week. This also might be why we have been unable to find the smoking gun! By the time we were poking around trying to find the reason for the drop, the update/test had been removed.

Keeping track of AJAX results is on my weekly activity list. If it is a testing ground, I want to know how I might be impacted should those tests be implemented across all results.

After you posted the GA rank hack (thank you!) I applied it to our site. Our site has a relatively small niche audience and we don't get high volumes of AJAX search traffic. However! When I look at our averages over a week span at a time for #1 rank visits, I see a graph in the same shape as your AJAX visits. Our AJAX vists peaked at May 23 - 29, then dropped over the following weeks to half the previous amount from June 13 to June 19 - then there was a surge up last week to the previous levels. Our overall Google visits remained flat over the same period (with the exception of one week between May and June). Our site is very small, so I wouldn't call it a confirmation of your observations, but it certainly doesn't contradict what you are saying. An additional point, about half of our #1 ranked keyword visits are uses of our brand name and those visits did not seem to fluctuate. The drop and recovery happened with non-brand terms.
